Welcome to Ace Engineering Works. My channel shows my projects and the playing around I do with steam models and toys, most of which I have repaired or restored in some way. I also carry out repairs for others and publish a video blog to document repairs. Currently I have several other projects on the go with custom bodywork and specialist paining of parts, videos to follow shortly.
Ace Engineering Works - Talyllyn Railway pt 1
A lovely day trip to the world famous Talyllyn railway, first of a 2 part instalment.
First I took a ride behind Edward Thomas up to Abergynolwyn, then waited for Dolgoh to make the final journey to Nant Gwernol.

Previously “After the dust had settled, some years later a committee decision was made and it was decided to recoup some of the money and to sell the engine for scrap. The engine was put up for auction and was sold to the highest bidder, in this case, Woodhams of Barry. An arrangement was made to collect the engine from the nearest mainline terminus, and Reaper was duly removed from the engine ...

Thank you for viewing part 2. Due to the positioning of me and the camera, this video is for the enthusiast of the sound of the steam locomotive, in this case the South African Class NG G16 - in particaular build number 138 and a short clip of 87 climbing into Beddgelert station. There are plenty of whistling to be heard and on the odd occasion an engine unit looses traction. Its great to hear ...
South Devon Garden Railway Group - A Winter boil up

Captured during the early weeks of the new year, a few mad folks having a good steam up. Unfortunately there was no Gauge 1 action to be had, so we made do with each others company and had a good laugh. A nice selection of locomotives not commonly seen, but enjoyed to the maximum on this cold, still January day.

During Spring - Summer 2017 Dad and I went on out travels again. We stopped last year at the W&L railway during some horrible weather (of which I may make a video of), met some lovely people and vowed that we needed to return with better weather. It HAPPENED! This is a video account of the Journey there and back behind (and in front of) 823 'Countess'. Purely a headphone only video as the sound...

Some short clips collected from over the summer and autumn months of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway locomotives (DHR), most recently a few visitors who run the 'Indian Hills' exhibit at the Exeter Garden Railway Show. Running their John Shaw coal fired Darj B class, Roundhouse B Class and Darj A Class.
Ace Engineering Works - Cheddar/Roundhouse 'Ernie'
Переглядів 1,2 тис.6 років тому
Bought on a well known auction site a few weeks ago, this is a Cheddar/Roundhouse hybrid. Cleverly fitted together to create this unique 'cyclops cabbed' locomotive. Using an old generation (c1995) Roundhouse Billy chassis and a Cheddar Iver boiler and firing equipment, this loco wreaks character. Upon coming into my fathers hands it was apparent that the motion was very tired, so an overhaul c...
Ace Engineering Works - Woodrow Light Railway - Regner running & Mine operations
Переглядів 1,4 тис.6 років тому
Footage was captured during the 2016 visit and was shelved as there was so much! I've spent many hours sorting/cutting/compounding clips to use to make three videos. I decided to split the Regner footage into its own video as they are much slower and take a greater time to pass the shots. When this was filmed recently removed 32mm running loop from his layout and built the area into a Lead mine...

A video of running at Pauly's fabulous Woodrow Light Railway in October 2016. Here we see my Roundhouse Jack (manual) 'St George' (yet to have nameplates fitted) and also Paul's Accucraft Leader 'Christopher', both running with a rake of Accucraft IOM and an LGB balcony coach, also Jack hauling a vintage set of Brandbright 'PS' range of coaches. Many thanks to Yvette, Mike and Pauly for the vis...

Things in life are quite often being in the right place at the right time. I just happened to be in the area and I was invited to view the testing and review of the Garden Rail magazine article with the brand new Roundhouse Engineering Lilla. I checked with David Williams - GR editor, and he gave me permission to take a few shots to make this video - thanks David! As you can see she runs beauti...
Ace Engineering Works - Autumn steam up at the Staple Hill Railway

After nearly a year of bothering my friend Jim, he finally gave in and asked Dad and I over for a steam up on his garden fantastic railway. Still a little bit of a work in progress, with a huge extension planned, this very mature looking railway sets the scene well and gets the imagination going. Hard to believe it was only played up this spring?! Thanks goes to Isabel and Jim for having us ove...

Ace Engineering Works Accucraft Mortimer - Eric - The problem engine
Side 2?
Very nice. Saving for a Billy Kit. Probably build in stages. Meanwhile... trying to locate my binder with all of those Ted Stinson pull out plans from Garden Railways....
Good engine, good camera work to!
Looks and runs great, I was thinking of trying somthing like this with my SL1
Can this hornby clockwork track be used outside in the rain or will it rust? I want to build a permanent garden layout
Sadly it would have disappeared after a year or two.
😎
❤ Flying Scotsman
At 5:11 to fill the lubricator, it is best to squirt the stm oil from the top after opening the bttm drain hole. Keep on pumping the oil until oil shows up at the drain hole. Now, the lubricator cyl is free of water n air bubble. U can then suck out or stop pumping just maybe 1/8" above the bottom of the plug screw to allow steam input room in the lubricator. Yes, i understand u just ran this engine partially just B4 this video session. But still, it is better to nut (not) just drip it out and guess if the water is all out. This replenishing of the stm oil is nec. as u want to continue running the loco for more than the maker's designated run time. So goes w the water n fuel. But unless u have say, Goodall valve, or a clack valve, u can't replenish water under boiler pressure. U need to wait till the boiler cools down to 0 psi. Further more, if u c the lubricator's oil not being used or little used for the said duration run, then watch out!!!
Very well executed restoration. Great photography in the video too....I thoroughly enjoyed this clip. 👍🏻🇦🇺
A great video
I like your trains.
16 mm to . . ? what scale is it 1: 22,5 , or . . . . , please help me ( haha) .
16mm to the foot or 1:19 scale. Hope that helps.
@@AceEngineeringWorks Thanks, and the Mamod SL 1 models, they are 1 to... scale.?
@@S.D.L46XX There isn’t really an answer for this, they are smaller than 1:19 scale but not built to anything in particular.
The banjo might be better sealing on a fibre washer. O rings are great for those “hand tight” regularly opened items like filler plugs etc, but a banjo needs a good firm seal. Great first run.
I agree however the seat of the bolt is not flat to suit a fibre washer, it is shaped especially for an o ring, as is the boiler.
Steam roller sorted. Now to tackle the garden.
I no longer live at this address, the garden is well underway.👍
Thats a good old Iron 👍
I have this loco on my table😂😂😂😂😂
The link in the description is dead
So an upgraded boiler, safety valve, and wheels? Oh and a gas burner. Anything else?
Have you ever tried to separate the piston from the piston rod and the crank link on the other end from the piston rod?
Love the patina on the wheels and flywheel
Hi. Great video. Please could you tell me the colour or paint code for the red paint. Thanks. John.
what black paint did you use
BBQ paint for the black, direct to bare metal.
i don't think a small derail could almost break the locomotive
I realize this is an old video, but if you happen to to see this, can you tell me where you got the heating element? I have the same model on order from eBay and would be interested in getting a heater like the one you used in the video. Thanks!
Never mind. I should have read the comments first. Forest Classic.
Is all the models are operating on coal firing..?????
Fantastic. I still have mine from when I was a kid. I’m afraid to fire it up.
You can also run them on compressed air!
sadly people sometimes make fake videos of these and get toy models and fake it just for views by rusting it and destroying it
Is your liquid fuel just alcohol
The intro music is stunning. (Thinking of you freesciencelessons man)
Somebody made a right bog up of that , well fixed sir.
It’s about time you upload somthing lol
What a beautiful video, that paintwork on Dolgoch is amazing. Very relaxing piece of filming, looking forward to the rest. Happy New Year!
Thanks for the video totally enjoyed, mamod locomotives 🚂 would be great to!!😎🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🇬🇧
didnt expect a upload on here ever again, but here we are! any chance of some more mamod videos at some point?
No, this channel isn’t dead yet. Yes there will be more Mamod/mss loco videos. 👍
what rustic beautiful scenes along the rails. And i like these 16mm (1/.19th scale) models running on Ga. 0 narrow ga. tracks vs. on Ga. 1 wider tracks. The former much narrower track makes the loco's front too wide, almost would topple it down to the sides as how the prototype narrow ga. locos would look from the front. Only one request is to make at least one spur track imperfect, undulating in both X, Y, n Z coordinates so the loco would teeter totter. The right and left rails must go up and down out of phase like two sinusoidal sine wave. That would b like a true 2ft na. ga prototype operation!!! Is that possible in 1/19th modeling? I assume the wheels must be at least all sprung (vs. drilled frames w axles inserted) if not equalized w levers n springs.
I suggest that it would be possible to recreate that imperfection, but frustrations would run high as different rolling stock and engines could potentially favour to launch off of the rails in this area. But t the scene would be lovely when it worked and filmed. 👍
Nice angle shots. Like ur coach builds too.
Hi. Your passion for these beautiful steam locomotives is truly remarkable. Congratulations!
Part 2 will come soon. But you never made it
thats an awesome running session. but i have a question. the mamod loco in the video, how does it run so long. i have the MSS locomotive and it can even run a few feet
Excellent can you remember what lights you used in the carriages please ?
Excellent thank you, just purchased a used Lady Anne, my first proper live steam locomotive and this video is really helpful
Fantastic video mate. I love your channel. Chevalier is one beautiful loco. Subscribed :)
Those Engines are awesome. I have an MSS myself, probably going to fit a gas burner to it at some point
I have just finished repairing and restoring an S E 3 and agree that a tiny tweek of the timing makes quite a big difference. It will now run smoothly at very high speed (not something to do for too long!) and also "ticks over" very slowly. A good tip!
Año 1990. Lo conservo en cassette. En Colombia lo fabricaba Sonolux.
That is a beautifully running locomotive and an excellent video. I just ran my first steam locomotive today after many attempts. It is a vintage Mamod SL1K locomotive that I built myself to work on 1 Gauge track and their lies the first problem I encountered. My kit did not have enough gaskets so I went to the hardware store and bought a sheet of cutable rubber gasket which was much too soft to cut properly. This prevented the steam from entering the cylinder and caused a massive pressure leak from the sight glass plate. I then acquired some additional original gaskets and installed them. After resetting the O ring beneath the sight glass I tried it again and to my dismay the side rods started to bind and after some research I learned that the wheels had become loose from their axles. So I pulled off the wheels and re-quartered them then fused them back onto the axles using Loctite 603. After letting them cure for a day I attempted to fire it up but it would not build up enough steam to run. It was then I noticed that the whistle lever was being held open by a screw which holds the back cab bracket into place. After removing this screw I fired it up again and lubricated everything. It was then that it took off and ran like hell. Still currently breaking it in but it's so satisfying to see it run and it's getting better each time. I love it.
Admire u stuck w it till u got all the bugs out. Yes, the earlier LadyAnne like this videoer's and all other RndHse engines didn't have water gauge like even the cheaper MadMom and dat was dis-srvc!!! It'll b great if their products hav Goodall valve so u can continue to run. I don't know if their new Ag Lady has it. But finally, due to Accucraft competition, their product is improving e.g., sprung axles. Hopefully, they'll upgrade their rods n valve gears to 3D contoured ones, even w flutings vs. flat bent cut rods.
Thank you and good to know.
This is great
Have you ever experimented with hedge hogging on the boiler? It seems that the major fault with mamod locomotives is a boiler that doesn't produce any steam, it seems like the extra heating surface area would greatly improve performance .
Honestly, I’ve never needed to do this. The alcohol burners can produce too much steam, gas can be adjusted easily and tablets seem ample. From my experience, if an engine appears to not be steaming enough, there’s usually enough steam and a fault in the mechanicals somewhere. Mamod/MSS locos don’t generally need better performance.
@@AceEngineeringWorksThanks for the reply, actually, I have experienced excellent performance at low altitude, but since I live at 6000feet, there doesn't seem to be enough oxygen for the fire to burn properly. Resulting in a sluggish locomotive. I chipped off the old esbit residue (it is now alcohol fired) yesterday, hoping that makes an improvement.
i love your toys i want your toy trains
what scale are the tracks? where can i buy them?
The track is 16mm/ft (1:19 scale) 32mm gauge. Available from garden railway suppliers, this particular track is Peco SM32.
